about

in Memoriam Yusef Lateef

By the time I started composing Syntactic Adventures for the Momenta String Quartet I had become more familiar with each players' individual sound, and so I created several sections of the piece with specific musicians in mind.

Syntactic Adventures is dedicated to Yusef Lateef, my mentor, creative collaborator, and friend of over 25 years. We made dozens of recordings together and performed countless concerts all over the world. Yusef not only opened up many creative doors for me, he also opened me up as a human being and for that I am grateful.

Syntax is an idea Yusef and I spoke about. It has been a topic of fascination for years among curious and creative musicians. In English we say, "I am going home" but not "I am going house" or "Home going am I." But in music we can arrange the syntax how we imagine it, forwards, backwards, upside down, etc. and still be understood. Music itself is perhaps the ancestor of all spoken languages. It is after all, the language of feeling.

Each of the four movements in Syntactic Adventures explores different ideas about language, including call and response, combinatoric counterpoints, symmetric hexatonic patterns, and what I call, "Thematic Fibers." Playing that particular woven interplay of motion and color asks for a unique kind of virtuosity and togetherness of breath an timing between the performers. The amazing chemistry Momenta String Quartet possesses allowed them to achieve that par excellence.
