about

In 2013 Mike Rosen, director of Oberlin Percussion Group, commissioned me to write a piece for them. Many of the rhythms found in Orbits are notated orchestrations of rhythms that I have been inventing, exploring, and playing on my hand drums for many years. I wanted to bring the deep visceral knowledge and spirit that comes from actually playing rhythm to the world of contemporary "classical" percussion ensembles.

The title, Orbits, references my concept of "Cyclic Verticalism" whereby combinations of "horizontal" rhythm cells of twos and threes are layered in "vertical" polyrhythms. Combined with the pitch materials, they create what I call "Ostinatos of Circularity." I use them as a kind of generative DNA in both my written and spontaneously composed musics to generate motions in sound and ultimately form itself. The careful listener will hear one of these Ostinatos of Circularity in sections of both Syntactic Adventures and Orbits, and a different one can be heard in both Morphic Resonances and Garden, Ashes.

I have always been interested in creating and developing new languages and concepts of rhythm and the Odense group put in the hard work of learning, understanding, and interpreting some of these new ideas. They played with virtuosity and were able to express my creative interpretation of the ancient Bantu idea of "apartness and togetherness."

Orbits is dedicated to and inspired by the great composers and drummers Tony Williams, Joe Chambers, Billy Hart, and Max Roach.
