about

Rupert Sheldrake's idea of Morphic Resonances states that memory is inherent in nature and that morphs, or "fields of information" reverberate and exchange information within a universal life force. Seen from a certain perspective this universal life force could be music itself and that morphic resonances of sound infuse us, reaching across both geographic regions and historic and future time.

Morphic Resonances was composed especially for the Momenta String quartet upon the request of Stephanie Griffin who performs in the New York Go: Organic Orchestra. It unfolds in 3 movements each of which addresses different ways of thinking about intervals: combinatronics, triple diminished patterns, and pentatonic tonal patterns. It concludes with a kind of "alap" which is traditionally the opening exploration of a raga. I could not ask for a more talented and sensitive group of musicians than the Momenta String Quartet. In both of these string quartets you can hear their attention to detail and nuance. They rose to the challenge of playing some of the complex "Ostinatos of Circularity" while breathing life and heartfelt feeling into the melodic themes.
