about

Growing up on the South Side of Chicago I was fortunate to hear some of the great blues musicians who lived nearby. Through experiencing the music of artists like Howlin' Wolf I saw how musical technique can exist in complete resonance and service to the expression of deep feeling.

The title, Lamento references the mournful arias found in some Italian Operas, but we know too, that the blues feeling is universal. In this piece I was looking for a coloristic emotion of transcendent nostalgia and so I gave Marco and Kaori more freedom to breathe and express their inner voices in the sound. To me, their playing evoked Wabi Sabi, the beauty that resonates with the transient quality of objects in nature and natural processes. In music, after each note sounds, it returns to silence, which is a kind of death. Music can express an acceptance of this transience and once we experience this, or any kind of transcendent moment, we will never be the same.
