The title, Garden, Ashes is taken from a novel by Danilo Kiš. In it he speaks eloquently of childhood memories of his father. I was inspired by some of my own early childhood memories in composing Garden, Ashes and synchronistically, we recorded it on what would have been my father's 91st birthday. The title also suggests to me the idea of cycles: seedlings, growth, blossoming and then the inevitable decay, which in turn nourishes new life.

Marco and Kaoru have performed in the New York Go: Organic Orchestra since its inception in 2005, so I knew I could trust them with the feeling and give them more openness in bringing the composition to life. They play with a kind of imagination and skill that serves to bring forth the emotional coloration, or "rasa" as it is called in Indian music.
